One of our external distinguishing features is that its sign above the door way hangs upside down!

Over the past 80 yrs or so anyone who visited or lives in Louth will have seen the upside down sign that use to be Wrights of Louth and before that Parkers and prior to that the man who started it all (Mr Platt) of Platts Grocery Store.

The true story behind the upside-down sign.

First let’s do away with a couple of the myths and rumours

·         It wasn’t hit by lighting

·         It wasn’t knocked by an Imp from the church (That’s a story for Lincoln Cathedral)

·         It wasn’t put up by an Australian sign writer

I have heard many rumours on how this sign got to be upside down and its none of them the truth is rather boring but one of the best marketing points in its day.

The shop used to be a general grocery store, its owner, a man called Bill Platt, who ran it for many years from 1913 until he was in his seventies, was famed for his knowledge of local history as well as for the quality of his shop in Little Eastgate. He had business acumen, too. When the sign over his shop doorway blew down in a storm, it was affixed by accident the wrong way up; Bill recognised that it quickly became a talking point and therefore a good advert and simply left it that way. saying “well if the people of Louth are talking about my sign being upside down then they are talking about my shop what an advert”

Keeping the sign upside down, Since Mr Platt its been a Stationary shop, a Newsagents and much-loved bookshop, a dance studio and now although the premsises changed hands yet again the owner Mr Hart of Rosewood Foot Health Care (The Foot Doctor) has continued the tradition! and will keep the sign upside down.

No longer a  Gimmick its now just a part of Louth.
